Destination Maldives

Maldives is a South Asian country, located in the Indian Ocean, south-southwest of Srilanka. It consists of 1190 islands grouped into 26 natural atolls scattered over an area of 90,000 sq. km straddling the equator between latitudes 7?6? north and 0?42? south and longitudes 72?32? and 73?46? east. Out of 1190 coral islands 202 are inhabited islands and 92 are exclusive resort islands. For administrative purposes the Maldives government organized these atolls into nineteen administrative atolls and seven administrative provinces.

The Maldives has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year round and a great deal of sunshine. The temperature ranges between 24 and 33 ?C throughout the year. Although the humidity is relatively high, the constant sea breezes help to keep the air moving. The weather is determined largely by the monsoons; the Southwest monsoon from May to November and the Northeast monsoon from December to April. The hottest month on average is April and the coolest, December. February is the driest with December to April being relatively dry. The Maldives is in the equatorial belt and therefore severe storms are rare. The annual rainfall averages 2,540 millimeters in the north and 3,810 millimeters in the south.

Due to the warm temperature throughout the year, light, cotton and linen wear is ideal dress for Maldives. In Male?, the capital island and other inhabited islands it is recommended that women wear modest clothing without baring too much.

The population of Maldives is about 300,000. Origin of the Maldivians are lost in antiquity, but history reveals that the islands have been populated for over 3,000 years ago. Early settlers were travellers on the Silk Route and from the Indus Valley Civilisation. Inherently warm, friendly and hospitable by nature, it is easy to feel comfortable and relaxed with a Maldivian.

Maldives has a proud history and rich culture evolved from the first settlers who were from various parts of the world travelling the seas in ancient times. Maldives has been a melting pot of different cultures as people from different parts of the world came here and settled down. Some of the local music and dance for instance resemble African influences, with handbeating of drums and songs in a language that is not known to any but certainly represents that of East African countries. As one would expect there is a great South Asian influence in some of the music and dancing and especially in the traditional food of the Maldivians. However many of the South Asian customs especially with regard to women - for instance the Sub Continent?s tradition of secluding women from public view - are not tenets of life here. In fact women play a major role in society - not surprising considering the fact men spend the whole day out at sea fishing. Many of the traditions are strongly related to the seas and the fact that life is dependent on the seas around us.

Dhivehi is the language spoken in all parts of the Maldives. English is widely spoken by Maldivians and visitors can easily make themselves understood getting around the capital island. In the resorts, a variety of languages are spoken by the staff including English, German, French, Italian and Japanese.

The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa and Laaree. The exchange rate for US Dollar is MRf 12.85 for a dollar. One Rufiyaa is equivalent to 100 laarees. Rufiyaa bank notes come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500. Coins are in the denominations of MRf.2.00, MRf.1.00, 50 laarees, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 laaree. The US Dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. Payments in the resorts and hotels can be made in most hard currency in cash, travellers? cheques or credit cards. Commonly used credit cards are American Express, Visa, Master Card, Diners Club, JCB and Euro Card.

Health care facilities are improving almost on a daily basis. The Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Male? is the biggest hospital in the country providing sophisticated medical care. ADK Hospital is the biggest private health care facility and follows high medical standards. Some resorts have in-house doctors. A decompression chamber is within easy reach of most resorts in case of a diving emergency.

Up-to-date technology and international satellite links allow Maldives to have a sophisticated communications system. IDD facilities are available on all resorts and card phones are available on all inhabited islands. Dhiraagu and Wataniya are the Maldives Telecommunications Company, they also provides mobile telephones for daily rental.

Spinner Dolphins are the commonest species, and they occur here in their tens of thousands. They have a regular daily routine to their lives, feeding offshore at night, coming into the atolls in the early morning, and leaving again for the open ocean in the late afternoon. This dependable schedule means that it is very easy to find Spinner Dolphins at certain times every day. And as a result, many Maldivian resorts offer morning or afternoon dolphin excursions to see Spinners. While nothing with wildlife can be absolutely guaranteed, you will never have a better chance to watch wild dolphins playing in their natural environment than right here in the Maldives.

Alternatively, if you would like to see even more dolphins, and whales too, why not try a cruise on one of our many comfortable safari boats? Species that are regularly seen on special whale watching safaris include the Blue Whale, Sperm Whale and Pilot Whale as well as seven different types of dolphin (Spinner, Bottlenose, Risso?s, Spotted, Striped, Fraser?s and Rough-toothed). Maldivian specialities, which are frequently seen here but hardly ever anywhere else, include Dwarf Sperm Whale, Melon-headed Whale and Tropical Bottlenose Whale (long considered the rarest whale in the World, but now known to be a Maldives resident). You may also be lucky enough to spot a pod of magnificent Killer Whales (Orcas), which contrary to popular belief do not live only in cold waters.
